Policy No:
02/00-1
Effective Date:
July 26, 2000

Legislative/Regulatory Requirements

Section 29 of the Adequacy Standards Regulation requires a police services board to have a policy on problem-oriented policing. In addition, section 3 requires the Chief of Police to establish procedures and processes on problem-oriented policing.

Board Policy

It is the policy of the Regional Municipality of York Police Services Board with respect to problem-oriented policing that the Chief of Police will:

  1. require appropriate supervisors and front-line members to work, where possible, with municipalities, school boards, businesses, community organizations and members of the public to address crime, public disorder and road safety problems;

  2. require appropriate supervisors and front-line members to promote and implement problem-oriented policing initiatives to respond to identified crime, community safety, public disorder and road safety problems, including repeat calls for service and repeat victimization;

  3. ensure that supervisors and front-line members are provided with information and resource material on problem-oriented policing;

  4. promote the use of directed patrol, targeted enforcement and other initiatives to respond to high crime or high occurrence places/areas and serial occurrences;

  5. develop procedures to support the promotion and implementation of problem-oriented policing; and

  6. provide information in the annual report on the steps taken by the police service to promote, implement and evaluate problem-oriented policing initiatives.
