Board Mandate

Police Service Boards are civilian governing bodies mandated to oversee local police services. The Police Service Board directs the Chief of Police through policy, and the Chief implements or operationalizes the Board’s direction. The Chief of Police is accountable to the Board.

Section 37 of the Community Safety and Policing Act defines the legislated responsibilities of police service boards in Ontario. After consultation with the Chief of Police, the Board sets the overall objectives and priorities of the police service. The Board is also responsible for appointing the members of the police service, for hiring the Chief and Deputy Chiefs of Police and for monitoring the performance of the Chief. The Board also establishes policies for the effective management of the police service. The Board approves the operating and capital police budget and is also responsible for developing a Business Plan for the police service every three years.
